My new AKAI APC40

This Christmas I was given the wonderful AKAI APC40 MIDI controller for Ableton Live so, not having recorded music for many years, I simply had to give it a spin and see what it could do. And what better than to create a Christmas track. Yes, know it’s the New Year now, but it took a few days to properly get the hang of :)

It’s amazing the extra productivity you gain having all the software controls on the screen accessible from hardware sliders. buttons and faders. Anyway, I’ve uploaded the track (which I think didn’t come out too badly for a first attempt) to SoundCloud, following which are some lyrics I wrote for the tune (but didn’t record).

So Far Away (at Christmas)

The Christmas lights are gleaming,
And music is filling the air.
The snow on the ground, like the love all around,
Is shining everywhere.

Children are laughing and screaming,
At the end of another year.
It’s a wonderful sound – Santa’s coming to town.
One more day and he’ll be here.

At home the fires are glowing,
The presents are under the tree.
It’s cosy and dry and the night’s flying by,
For everyone but me.

[CHORUS] Outside the sky is snowing,
Tomorrow is Christmas Day.
But I can’t get high with a tear in my eye,
When you are so far away.

I don’t want to spoil the evening,
So I’ll put on my best smile.
I’ll have fun with the blokes and tell a few jokes,
And be thinking of you all the while.

But inside I’ll be dreaming,
And try not to feel so blue.
For soon it’s New Year, and you’ll be back here,
And I’ll be together with you.

[CHORUS] Outside the sky is snowing,
Tomorrow is Christmas Day.
But I can’t get high with a tear in my eye,
When you are so far away.

So, with that late blast of festivity, I wish you a happy new year!
